Summer Activities

While the troop suspends regular activities during the summer months, it does not mean that we take a break form Scouting. Tay House scouts have the opertunity to participate in a wide range of summer adventures.

Massawepie Scout Camps

Massawepie Scout Camps is a 3,769 acre scout reservation located near Tupper Lake, NY in the heart of the Adirondacks. It is owned and operated by Seneca Waterways Council.

Every summer, Tay House scouts have the opportunity to spend up to two weeks at Massawepie. While there, scouts can hike, swim, sail, mountain bike, shoot shotguns and rifles, and participate in a variety of inter-troop activities, and meet scouts from all across the Northeast.

Massawepie signups are generally announced at the February court of honor, with an initial deposit required to secure a spot with the troop. Final payment is due later in the spring.

Algonquin

The Algonquin Canoe Excursion is a long-standing tradition of Tay House. Run roughly every other year, the trip takes our scouts to the Algonquin Provincial Park for a 10 day canoe trip across the park's magestic lakes.

The Algonquin trip is a high adventure trip open to scouts aged 14 or older. Scouts must have earned Swimming and Canoeing merit badges prior to attending and require the approval of the scoutmaster.

Details about the Algonquin trip are announced at the February court of honor. Because of park regulations on group sizes, space on the trip is extremely limited, so scouts are encouraged to sign up early.

Philmont

Philmont Scout Ranch is the BSA's premiere high-adventure destination, located in Cimarron, New Mexico. Covering more than 140,000 acres in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, Philmont offers 12-day backpacking excursions to scouts age 14 or older. Scouts hike with a crew of about 7-10 other scouts and two to three adult leaders, carrying everything they need on their backs. Crews follow a pre-selected itinerary, stopping at assigned camps each night. Many of these camps have program associated with them where scouts can learn about the history of westward expansion, Native American life, nature and conservation, and more.

Philmont crews are run each year by Seneca Waterways Council and fill up fast. If interested, you should contact the council service center to find out about crew availability, dates, and costs.

National Jamborees

The BSA holds National Scout Jamborees every four years at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. Scouts from all over the county and around the world come together for a 10 day celebration of Scouting.

Scouts attend the Jamboree as part of a “Jamboree Troop” made up scouts from across the council. If interested in attending, please contact the council service center for more information.
